Anyway. My contribution to the thread:
I don't wanna do you no harm
I just want to die in your arms
Crushing, crushing line. It's deep, it's just the right amount of dark, and if I weren't a total badass it would definitely bring me to tears.
Yes. The beginning makes me laugh a little and say, "He sure knows how to get your attention." But it's also a poetic metaphor for the narrator's life and very well done. The whole song is just as you've said, deep, "just the right amount of dark," sad, crushing, and just beautiful.
Good to see you back, Judge. I've missed your posts.

Hey, thanks! Yeah I been away a little while, but of course Kill Each Other brought me right back. Working on something presently that should lead to some Homesick-style OP'ing in the near future, hopefully that'll work out
What happened son, you could have been someone
You could have been much more
I love the fact that I've been listening to SA for years and years and I continue to be struck by the power of different lyrics at different times. Today, it's this:
They're all going somewhere
They all have some place they have to be
Maybe I should join them
I wish I could; I think I have to stay here with me
All that we are not stares back at what we are. - W. H. Auden
Since I just failed my fourth attempt at taking at least a two-week hiatus from listening to SA, I figured that I'd stop by this thread and add a few more of my favorite lines...
(sorry if any of these have been previously mentioned)
-And I won't make you do a thing, I won't say anything...
(FINALLY found "Miss This" on imeem. Too bad I can't find it on any download sites)
-There's a bright spot on the dark side of a long and winding road.
this one isn't really a line, but I love what Dave says at the beginning of James at 16
"Thank you for your patience, and now that we've abused it so badly we're really gonna test it here."
-How long have you been on hold? Makes you want somebody to hold.
-We lived through another day, it's a good excuse to celebrate, take a number, knock on wood, we'll find a reason to feel good.
-And they tell you which way not to go and so you go that way.
I think I may have mentioned this in another thread, but I like the parts of Sometime to Return, Can't Even Tell, and Just Like Anyone where he like... repeats the same words and words that sound like each other (oh, you know what I mean)
-What you are is what you see and you see me and we can be something can call we, we are, we are doing [the?] what we can
-She starts wondering what it's like to liked by everyone and like everyone be just like anyone and just wants to be so just like anyone.
-I know you know I wanna know how I feel...
Sorry if some of these have been posted; but I must have missed this thread. Posting quite a few but missing many more. I think Dan's songwriting has been underutilized by the band; but Dave is a great song writer. Even through grinding guitars and screaming vocals; It seems like every song has a "silver lining,” that's what I enjoy the most.
So the darkness fades
And the light, will come shining through (pirnerism)
You could try to save me
And I'll try to save you
Throw away your calendar
And saddle up your salamander (who thinks of this?)
And now it seems my peace of mind has come up for the biddin'
All those I respect and trust I guess they were just kiddin'
I was tired of being tired
I could not get no rest
So I kept sleepwalking and talking in my sleep
Yes, I did my best
Now they're cranking 'em out by the millions
They look and act exactly just the same
And each one's one in a million
And each has got its own elusive game
Caged rat (over and over)
There's a ringing in my ear that's heaven sent (it’s Soul Asylum!!)
But he never said "Poor little old me"
Tried all my tricks I tried to steal a kiss
Splinters and slivers stuck all over my lips
Oh, how time flies when it's got nowhere to go
Up to the skies and it only goes to show
I've waited here for you a long, long time
I think I'd better go
He picked up the paper from the bitter cold morning
He had just gone to sleep, he had to get up for work
By morning he's a watchman and by night he's a waiter
In the late afternoon he works as a clerk
And he can't pay the doctor bills, he just can't afford the pills
The car's repossessed and the child support's due
But he saw the world through the eyes of a child
Big problems seem smaller and old things seem new (AWESOME!!! )
Probably; my all time favorite.
And what is sacred
This I know
It's just me and you
On a train moving slow
To heaven

The below lyrics aren't Soul Asylum's but they are Profound and unfortunately all to often true. They may not be exact; just singing it in my head right now; correct me if I am wrong.
The ones who love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest
And visit their graves on holidays at best
The ones love us least are the ones we'll die to please
If it's any consolation I don't begin to understand them
