Mavericks Want Somebody to Shove

Post by CrazyLittleWoman »

Last night I went to a Central Hockey League game between the Missouri Mavericks and the Mississippi River Kings. During a face-off, the distinctive opening bars of "Somebody To Shove" blasted from the arena p.a. system. :D I was so surprised that I yelled, "That's my band!" My family looked at me and said, "That's Soul Asylum?" Yes, it was!

The Mavericks were so inspired by the song that they came up with the puck and scored their first goal of the game.

But Shove's inspiration didn't end there. At 18:57 in the third period, a round of fights broke out that included eight players. Soon the ice was empty of all but a scattering of helmets, sticks, and gloves. It took the refs five full minutes to explain all the penalties to the announcer. A few players were escorted off the ice and a total of five players ended up in the penalty boxes.

Thirty seconds after the players returned to the ice, another set of fights broke out that included everyone except the two goalies. More players were ushered out. The personnel changed, but the penalty boxes remained full and the refs spent another five minutes explaining all the penalties to the announcer.

Ten seconds after they began playing again, yet more fights broke out. Repeat above. All of the fights were instigated by the Missouri Mavericks.

Then at the buzzer, the River Kings goalie got called for roughing.

Hearing "Somebody to Shove" was the unexpected pleasure of the night. The Missouri Mavericks got trounced 5-2. :(

I had no idea that Somebody To Shove could have such a strong effect on people! Maybe Dave was thinking about this when he wrote it.

I found a youtube video of all the fights! Just keep in mind that for every fight that is shown, there were at least three more happening simultaneously. Fights start at 0:49.
