Pfft... this one's pretty great, but it can't touch Silver Lining.

Silver Lining has some great high points, but this one is more consistent. Overall, much better. I put SL away after a fortnight, this one will stay on my turntable for months.

Regarding the artwork: The picture of the fish on the tricycle reminds me of these fish-people in the anime Slayers. I'm at Otakon this weekend so I have anime on the brain, and the fish-trike picture amused me both as a SA fan and an anime fan. :)

That's funny because I have it the other way around... it took me a few listens to get into the Silver Lining but then it became a very addictive album, with this one I immediately liked all the songs at first hear so after a few listens they already lost their spark a little.

By The Way and I Should've Stayed In Bed would have easily become my favourites if I hadn't heard them before, but I have... in fact, I've overplayed those two songs so much in my life that I just skip them almost everytime I listen to the album because these new versions aren't very different from the old ones. And for the rest of the songs... there really isn't a bad one on there but so far they don't stand out either, except for perhaps Into The Light.

Another thing I miss on this one is the rough edges. What I always liked about SA is that they could come up with some mean riffs that would turn a song almost into a metal song, and even though this is an uptempo album, even the more aggressive songs sound more like pop-punk than anything else.

All in all, it doesn't live up to my expectations like the Silver Lining did, but it's not a bad album.

If we are talking about rough edges I noticed the absence of those on The Silver Lining, in fact it was the first thing I noticed when listening to that record. I was like "Hey, this is Soul Asylum, how come this sounds so cleaned up and restrained?" After time I got used to the production on the record and it started to grow on me. Success Is Not So Sweet is one of my favorite Soul Asylum songs.

Time will tell if Delayed Reaction is a better record than The Silver Lining, but on first listen it certainly was. I think Gravity is a much better opener than Stand Up And Be Strong for instance but this thread isn't about comparing the last two records, it's about your opinion of the new record.

I certainly like it, I love The Streets, easily my favorite on the record. I don't think Cruel Intentions fits on here though, as mentioned before it sounds more like something off Dave's solo record than a Soul Asylum song. Gravity and Into The Light are both really good and a great way to begin the album. I have always loved By The Way and was happy to see them put it on record and I like the album version but I don't think it is as good as the original one on the RT single. The original had better and sharper vocals whereas this one has a more raspy and hoarse sounding Dave and the simplicity of the original was part of its charm, that being said By The Way is still one of my favorites off the new record.

Pipe Dream is really good, I like the structure of the song. Only complaint I have(and it's not a big one) is during the chorus the vocals don't really stand out they're just kind of buried in there.

Lets All Kill Each Other is good, not really great but good.

I like The Juice, another good song. It seems like it would of fit on The Silver Lining as they started churning out these mid tempo rockers about that time.

Take Manhattan is ok, don't really care for the storytelling in this one. If Soul Asylum is gonna do a storytelling song they've done it better before with We 3 and String of Pearls.

I Should Have Stayed In Bed is good, I like the soaring chorus, not really that special of a song but good enough. I think the first half of the record is considerably better than the last half.

I liked all the bonus tracks on the Best Buy edition, didn't love any of them but all of them were decent enough.

^ I agree about the Silver Lining sounding more clear in production but I don't mind that. What I meant with rough edges is that Delayed Reaction is an album that I could let my mom listen to and I'm sure she would like almost all of it... The Silver Lining at least had Bus Named Desire and Slowly Rising... songs with a bad ass riff in it, that might be too "heavy" for some people. You can't find that on the new one and I miss that. But that's a personal thing... I'm a metalhead.

i feel that the silver lining was a complete puzzle that was put to gether to fit where delayed reaction came from different puzzle pieces that were just all thrown together and thrown on to make a complete cd ...either way both great stuff ... ill take anything just as long as soul asylum keeps putting out stuff and doing there thing

With the discussion of Silver Lining, I must say I think that was a great album (especially Lately, and also Oxygen, All is Well, Crazy Mixed Up World and most of the others). I even thought Great Exaggerator, which has gotten some disparaging comments here, was okay.

I got Delayed Reaction the other day, and I must say it does not disappoint. I was a little concerned after I had heard Gravity as the first single. On first listening, I thought it was an okay song, but not great to the level of the four I mentioned above on Silver Lining. (I still think that). But a number of the songs on Delayed Reaction really are that good. Into the Light is by far the best song. Let's All Kill Each Other is also great, as are Taking Manhatten, By the Way, Pipe Dream, and the Juice. The Streets is also pretty good.

I agree with those that said Cruel Intentions fell a little flat, and I also felt the same way about Should've Stayed in Bed. However, with 6 of the 10 songs falling into what I would describe as "great" and two more that are pretty good, this is overall a great album. I put it up there with Silver Lining, Candy from a Stranger, and Let Your Dim Light Shine.

Overall, this is a Great Album. I just hope Soul Aslyum makes another trip to the Southeast for a concert sometime in the near future.

Okay, so now that I've been listening to the album since it came out (42 times according to my iTunes count); this is what I think.

I like it; it flows well and makes a pleasant listening experience. Any worries about this being half a collection of B-sides and throwaways seem unfounded.

If "The Silver Lining" would be akin to Hang Time; then this album falls somewhere between Dim Lights and Candy. It works well as an album, but has few standout songs. The whole is much better than the individual parts.

1. Gravity:
This will hold up great against anything from Hang Time; and is easily the best song on the album.

2. Into the Light
I like the studio version better than the live version.

3. The Streets
Everyone seems to love this song; but it took a few listens for it to grow on me. i would peg this as the second single; if they have one. It's a fun song. I think I read a review where they said "Dave can't hit the high notes." in reference to this song. I kind of agree, but I don't think it matters.

4. By The Way
A solid recording, but I think I prefer the "demo" version from way back.

5. Pipe Dream
I'm indifferent to this one.

6. Let's All Kill Each Other
This is probably the most rockin' song on the album. My wife doesn't like the lyrics; despite the sarcasm. She does agree it is very catchy, though.

7. Cruel Intentions:
This definitely has a "New Orleansy/lounge act" vibe. It works in the context of the album. I can't imagine listening to it stand alone.

8. The Juice
For some reason this reminds me of Hotel California. I have no idea why

9. Take Manhattan
Definitely my favorite song thus far. I like everything about this. While most songs have a listen count of 40-45; this one is up to 62.

10. I Should have Stayed in Bed
This version doesn't feel much different than the Palais Royale version to me. I'm surprised it works as well as it does.

11/12: Leave This Town / Time Will Tell:
Extra songs make me feel less ripped off. But, these feel clearly like B-side material.

13. Your Generation /Good Morning, Good Morning:
Meh..
