I've heard the album about 5 or 6 times now and it's a good album but not great. Maybe more listens will increase my fondness for it but very few chills on this album for me.

Pretty much the same as how I feel about it. And I think that musically it could have been a bit more adventurous.

I've listened to the album a few times over, and kind of agree with most of the "glass is half empty" types. Its nice to have the album, but with the exception of Gravity, there isnt a single song on there I would miss if I never heard it. The album has no "edge" to it.

I think this album largely suffers from some of the same problems that really hurt SL and CFAS. The songs live are just so much better, and by the time it gets recorded it just loses that edge. Gravity is a solid A, Into the Light and Streets are fun, Manhattan is solid. The rest is filler.

If they are going dig into their back catalog, why not dust off some of those gems we have all been waiting to hear recorded for so long? Then again, we might sorely be disappointed. The Overreactors gig made CFAS seem like a "cant miss" album, but the album was arguably their worst ever. The production killed the edginess of songs, and album is largely forgotten and rarely do the songs get played live. The shows leading up to SL made it seem to be another gem, but the version of Oxygen we got was neutered, other songs were completely missing, like Freak Accident, and as solid as SL was, it was still "what could have been" for me.

Its almost like the guys don't know their own best songs, and need a real producer to get in there and separate the wheat from the chaff. Then again, as a fan for 20+ years now, its easy to be a "back seat producer" with 20/20 hindsight.

I guess I mostly just long for what I can never have.

What? Supporting my local music store and making a now very rare purchase of recorded music, in this case a cd, I bought the new SA. So far so good. The insert lists the tracks and four "bonus tracks." Great! Alas, there are no four bonus tracks on my cd. Oh, I see, the 1458 of us who bought the cd, indeed, true soul ass fans (bet I saw'em before you did!), not at Best Buy but at our local shop are penalized with a cd that lists four bonus tracks and then does not actually have them? What the hell?
Disappointing. The good news is that it's disappointing because the album is great and I bet those four extra tracks are good too.
Oh well. I still get a kick out of the band and will remain a stalwart fan.

If you bought a CD that lists 4 bonus tracks on the packaging; but the CD does not contain those four extra tracks I would go back to the place you bought it from and complain.

But this is a forum... so you can discuss and/or give your opinion on something. If some are critical of the new album or the song selection, then that's ok... everyone is free to give their opinion. It's not an attack on the band or whatever... I've been critical of the new album and I've given my reasons, but they're still one my favourite bands.

No one attacked the band. No one said they don't know what songs are good. No one said hey don't know what they are doing.

I said its "almost like they don't know their best songs", which is in reference to the fact that many of us have been longing to see some of these great songs get recorded, but they somehow keep missing the cut. Its their songs, they can record or not record what they want to. As fans, its perfectly okay for us to wish they would record different songs on an album.

As for the guys not knowing how to produce their own stuff, they have been at their critical and commercial best while working with established producers. The producers of Hangtime, GDU, and LYDLS have all won Grammy awards for their production skills. I get that those guys are expensive, and the band may just enjoy producing themselves at this point in their career. There is nothing wrong with doing it your way, and how you want to do it. What I was saying is that the band could likely benefit from these types of producers, if they wanted to/could afford to use them. I also said that as fan, its easier for us to see something that we feel could be better, and offer our own "back seat producer" opinions, and that hindsight is always 20/20. Its our right as fans to listen how/what we want, and their right as a band to play and record what/how they want.

I still love the band. I still buy the albums. I still go to the concerts. I just wish there was more to buy, and more to enjoy, and wish I could see some of my favorites find their way onto an album. Nothing wrong with that.
