Oooh, I agree on that one.

I don't know the official reason, but personally I think that not including Candy From A Stranger is a wise choice. Have you listened to it? It sounds like it came from Dave Pirner's solo album. Don't get me wrong, I liked the song, but it wouldn't fit in to Soul Asylum.

I seem to recall a radio show (right around the time Candy was released) which asked the question why Candy From a Stranger wasn't on the album, and Dave's response was something like, "Because Dan didn't think it wasn't good enough for the album". I'm sure there was a little more to it than that for it being omitted, but I do agree with lune ellise that Candy From a Stranger does sound more like a song from Dave's solo album (maybe its the piano and no backing vocals; funny how I don't feel the same way about We 3 on Horse though, maybe because Candy didn't make the album).

While Candy From a Stranger might have sounded out of place on the album, I don't think it would have been out of place as much as Losin' It, which was actually released as a bonus track on Candy in Japan. In my opinion, Losin' It has more of a GDU or LYDLS-type feel to it (especially the latter halves) where Candy seems to be more "laid back and mellow" throughout most of the album.

I'm curious as to what others think: If Candy was released on the album, would it seem out of place from the rest of the album, or would it go along with the other songs? I think it would go along well, especially since Horse has We 3, and even though its different from all the others, I can't picture it not being on there.

Where can I listen to "Freak Accident" and "Directions"? Everyone here seems to rave those songs...

Those songs were performed at a few shows and are on various bootlegs. I think Directions was played on a radio show several years ago; the dj brought Dan in for an interview and I think Dan brought a demo-quality version of the song.

I know it is a little late but I was in tenth grade when Candy came out and my buddy and I forged a note and left class and went to Best Buy or Target or something and got it right when the stores opened so we could be the "first" to buy it. I listened to it for the rest of the week and a couple weeks later they headlined one night at EdgeFest in Somerset, WI. After the show we were headed to Hudson, WI to grab some food so we went to Taco Bell. After we left, I saw someone trying to go through the drive through on their feet, and unbelievably it was Dave Pirner! I was just an absolute soul asylum freak at the time (and still am) so I started yelling that that was Dave Pirner. So I looked across the street to this gas station and there was this really nice, white bus and I figured it had tobe them so we parked and went inside and it was them! I just could not believe that I was in a gas station with my heroes. They were all really nice and we talked for awhile telling them how great of a show they had just put on. Dave must not have been successful at T-Bell cause he was busy putting toppings on a sandwich or hot dog. They were in a little bit of a hurry cause they had a show in Iowa the next day at noon. I wish I would have grabbed a disposable camera at the store but my mind was just racing so I didn't think of that till later. A really great night for me and one hell of a story for school on Monday!

I hadn't heard Candy until the '07 holiday show, but as it was my first time, it made a slight impression on me but not enough to stay imprinted. I know for sure I'd have enjoyed the performance more if I'd heard the song before, instead of it being so new to me.

Anyway, today, I came across a Google video of Candy on Fritzi's Facebook profile, and haven't been able to not replay it. :P It's so good!

I also hear the mellow and laid-back sound on Candy. I don't see it as out of place with the other songs on the album. Instead, it would've complemented them, IMO.

I think that might have been earlier on in the same radio promo spot where they took a call in question from me, because during the last 30 sec of my call, I mentioned my disappoinment that Lucky One had been left off, and asked them to make it a B side, and Dave responded with "another song that DAN didn't think was good enough to put on the record. His voice kinda sounded like he might be rolling his eyes or something similar. Dan was quick to save his skin by adding in that the omitted songs were put on an exclusive limited run (10,000) EP (often called the Losin' It EP by fans, it's not really titled anything, the Discography section lists it under miscellaneous/the_ird) to be sold only by indie music stores.

I posted the story of that radio encounter in the "Close Encounters of the SA Kind thread, including a link to download a recording of that call.

Being a Candy promo show call, it fits here too. If you want to hear Dave's voice when he expressed his comment on Lucky One's ommission, and Dan's save, you can hear it here:

The Lucky One discussion starts at about 1:30

1998.
I had been waiting for a new Soul Asylum album for almost 2 years.
Internet was relatively new in Chile and MTV was the major source of information at that time.
I heard rumors about a new album... sadly, it would be available in Chile many weeks later.
So I tried to forget it for a while (but I was still anxious).

It was an ordinary day of May and my best friend insisted in visiting me at my house – “Ok” I said.
When he arrived he told me he wanted to play in my radio a CD of Molotov he had just bought. I didn’t like that band so I didn’t hear.
And I didn’t mind.
And I was talking bla-bla-bla when my friend – he gave me this look… (jajaja) I could not believe… when I shut my mouth and realized it was not Molotov! It was Dave Pirner singing a song I had never ever heard before!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was speechless, so surprised… I couldn’t understand… How??? When!!!??
Candy From a Stranger????
It had been really difficult to get it… but my friend knew it would make me happy.
And this “new CD” certainly sounded different, unknown… but I enjoyed discovering it =o)
