@Tracy,

Wow, I don't think I would want to bother her like that. She probably has enough going on.

@Phil,

I hope it will work out too! Keep your fingers crossed for me! Hope things are going well with the new house!

I don't know. It is a cancer benefit. Maybe if you offer to make a donation, maybe you'll be able to get on a guest list. Can't hurt to ask. And it's better than sitting at home wondering what if!
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Awesome! Minnesota nice! So glad you're getting in, Meg! Hope to meet you. I'll have my 9 year old son with me wearing his Soul Asylum tshirt, so I should be easy to spot!

From the very moment I found out about the Kill Kancer benefit for Karl I knew this was something without a doubt I had to attend. My wife Patty and I have been Soul Asylum fans, freaks, collectors call us what you will, since the mid 80’s . Many of our road trips and best memories of different eras of the band were with Karl. We were not able to attend the benefit for Karl in 2004 which we where very sad about at the time and nothing was going to stop me from going to this one.

The Minneapolis music scene is something that I’ve always loved as a fan and as a musician. They still do something that is very hard to find in the music scenes of today and that is treat it like a community and if you give to the community it will give back. This is the way I’ve always know it and this show would not be and different.

Starting the night off was Curtis A with his blend of old school rock and classic covers the night was off with a roar.

This video will give you an idea.

Next up was Jordan Gatesmith of Howler playing an electric solo set full of great surf–punk playing and coolness. I had never heard Howler before and I was very impressed by Jordan’s playing and ability to pull off some of his bands tunes in a solo setting.

Here’s a Howler video with lots of shots of Minneapolis in it :)

Next up was a somber few minutes when the doctor who treated Karl came out to talk about esophageal cancer and the fight that Karl put up before passing away. As the doctor spoke you could have heard a pin drop in the room. The doctor also talked about how Karl’s name lives on in the operation room with the research and development of treatment founded by the Karl Fund.

The Magnolias were next. They ripped up a powerful set and left nothing behind. We were warned it was going to be loud which brought a smile to my face.

Here are a few pictures I took

So there was a rumor that the next band was going to play but when they finally DID hit the stage my reaction was “holy crap it’s the O’Jeez.” They played a fun 5 song set all with Dave on drums and singing away.

Dave and Dan were up next and played “Never Really Been” and “Oh Karl” before being joined onstage with everyone from Golden Smog to play "Lonesome Day”

Golden Smog finished out the show with a classic Smog 2 hour set of friends having fun and playing music together which was the theme of the night.

What a great night for a great cause and they raised 10K.

As always it’s great to meet up with everyone and talk, drink and hang out before, during and after the shows.

The one thing that I will have in my head about all of this is when I arrived early, I had a chance to check out the stage area. On the floor monitor, which ended up being in front of Dan, was this photo of Karl.

We miss you Karl and we will never forget…THANK YOU
