Is SA the Headliner?

Post by reboog711 »

Is Soul Asylum the head-liner for the Evan Dando/Fountain of Wayne/Soul Asylum gigs?

If I buy tickets can I expect a full 90+ minute set? Or are they an opener, playing somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes?

I'm considering going to the Capitol Theatre show; but not sure I want to put the effort for a short set. I assume Evan Dando is opening; but I have no idea if SA is 'bigger' than FOW in terms of ticket sales.

Anyone have any insight?

They are co-headlining (I asked Wes a while back), so they'll be playing the same time lengths.

As for what each set length is, I'm not certain.

I've been wondering that myself and I'm pretty sure SA is on first, making FoW the "bigger" act. The bill seems a bit upside down to me though 'cuz even though SA isn't huge or anything, I still think they're bigger than Fountains of Wayne. I mean, I didn't even know they were still together until I heard about this tour. I guess people say the same thing about SA, but SA has 84,000 Facebook fans while Fountains of Wayne has only 57,000. I don't know if that's an accurate measure of how popular a band truly is, but I feel like it definitely says something. But I guess what it all comes down to on a bill like this is which song do people wanna hear more? Stacy's Mom or Runaway Train?

The show I'm going to is only 10 minutes from my house so I'd go just to see them play 2 songs, but when it comes to traveling a long distance to one of these dates, I completely understand the issue.

I hope they get a full set, but recently I've learned that innocent-sounding terms like "co-headlining" and "equal set lengths" are just lies fed to you by the concert promoting industry to sell more tickets. It's a sick world we live in.

I'm about an hour away which isn't too bad. I saw Guster at the Capitol Theater earlier this year; so I know it is a good venue. I'll see SA a few days earlier at the casino.

But, I'm still on the fence...

Ha! When I asked my sister if she would tag along to the NYC show, I reminded her that she would know at least two songs--those songs.

I was kind of hoping that SA would go on last, but I wasn't sure. I do like Fountains of Wayne too and have wanted to see them in a club setting, so I'm sure I'll enjoy the show.

I'm in; I decided to splurge for the "Loge" seats and got really close to the center in the first row.

Anyone else going that wants to do dinner in the area before the show?

[Alternatively, anyone in the area have a place to recommend?]

I just got home from the Chicago show about an hour ago. We left after SA, and honestly, I'd laugh at Fountains of Wayne even trying to follow the type of performance Dave and the guys brought tonight. There's no way they could top it. Period. Heck, Dando's 30 minutes were a nice way to kick off the night.

This was my first time seeing the new incarnation of the band, and to me, they looked, acted and sounded like they were having fun. Winston sounded better than any of the times I saw them with Tommy on bass. Justin's not Dan, but he nailed quite a few parts I might have been skeptical about hearing beforehand. The set list was top notch, too-it's on my phone, which is charging, so I will post it later.

I feel like I can't truly be upset about SA going on before Fountains of Wayne because I'm equally as big a Fountains of Wayne fan as I am a Soul Asylum fan... while, considering live performance, I feel like SA should have been the closer. Soul Asylum still has feeling, and Dave is fully into it. Fountains of Wayne seems to be just sick of touring by now and getting tired of it... When applause comes on after a SA song Dave smiles genuinely and says "shucks, you're much too kind" (as per usual), but after a FOW song Chris will smile softly and just be like "thanks." I dunno, I feel a difference. And maybe it's just that some of you hardcore asylum fans are pissed off and feel offended that Fountains of Wayne closes, but what are you gonna do? Nothing, you just have to get over it. Even if I wasn't a Fountains of Wayne fan I'd stay for the entire show. I spent my money and I wouldn't want to waste it. And besides, music is music.

We left after SA's set for several reasons:
1. The tickets were won via Jam email, so they were free
2. Kids that are up and rarin' to go at 0600 hours Sat AM
3. There's no way in heck we could handle a FoW downer after SA's blistering set (reminded me of years ago when Def Leppard opened for Bryan Adams on their co-headlining tour; talk about a buzz kill)
4. We were glad SA was after Dando for the above reasons, but I completely hear what you are saying about paying $, etc.

Did Dave and the guys hang at the merch stand after their set? I never saw Dando there after his...

I believe Winston hung around the merch area, but there was no sign of Dave. For a fan like me, seeing Fountains of Wayne was a blast, I just wished they'd been before SA. Now, talking in terms of the songs themselves, FOW's songs are usually faster and a smidge more upbeat compared to SA. The only difference I feel is the presentation. But nope, Dave wasn't around. :( And like everyone here understands that Soul Asylum is more than just Runaway Train, the same goes for Fountains of Wayne. They're much more than "Stacy's Mom." All in all, the show I saw was amazing. Except for Evan's set....
