Pontiac-Indy-Kalamazoo-Cleveland Super Recap/Photos/Video

Post by nikkip »

When this tour was announced, I decided that a rock'n'roll vacation was in order to see as many shows as I could. According to Mapquest, our trip was 1139 miles. We stayed at campgrounds in a tent or in our van. Sometimes I didn't remember exactly where we were or what day it was. And it was amazing! Pittsburgh was initially in the plan too, since it's only an hour away but there was a conflict and we couldn't make it to that one. Conflict is the right word too...as I was very conflicted about not being there!

I knew that Skyler and her dad were planning to go to Pontiac, so it made sense to start there. We have been hoping to get to another show with them again but it's tricky with age restrictions and locations. For anyone unfamiliar with Skyler, we made a short doc about her and probably the coolest thing I've seen happen at a show...it's very SA related of course ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9qThLq_sMg. So it was really great seeing them again and Skyler's mom too! Dave commented after the show that they were "the cutest family ever" and he might be right!

The Pontiac, MI show was at an old place call The Crofoot, outside of Detroit. There were two local opening bands and I don't think Soul Asylum went on until after 11. The sound was not-so-good here, at least in the front it was hard to hear the vocals but that happens sometimes. We taped it and it actually sounds better on the recording than it did at the show. We had a really great time at that show and it was a nice start to the week :)

This tour was my first ever time seeing the Meat Puppets and I was at best a casual fan...liked the songs that I knew but wasn't really familiar with them. Admittedly, this first night I was a bit antsy to see Soul Asylum but....I found myself really looking forward to them by the second night. After seeing them at 4 shows, I'll go see them again whenever they're around. REALLY enjoyed their sets. They seem to be pretty accessible to fans after shows - hanging around, signing stuff and taking photos. This was easily the best co-headlining tour I've been to. If SA has to do co-headlining shows, I'd be happy if it was always with the MP.

There may or may not be video from this show. We filmed two songs but they haven't been reviewed or edited yet...so we'll see! In the meantime, here's some photos!

The Indy show was at The Rathskellar which is an old, authentic German Beer Garden with great food and so.much.beer. They played the outside stage there and the stage was maybe a foot tall or so. There were lots of picnic tables and well dressed people. Maybe an odd atmosphere (especially with the Meat Puppets playing while it was bright and sunny) for a rock show but something about that place I really liked LOL. We were there pretty much all day. Got there in the early afternoon, had lunch and hung out in the outdoor area enjoying beverages in the shade while both bands did soundcheck and what not. Can't really think of many better ways to spend a super hot afternoon. After Meat Puppets finished their set at that show, a very tall guy came and stood uncomfortably close to the stage right next to us, practically on the stage. He said he had seen SA back in the 80s but not since then. After maybe one or two songs, Dave shook the guy's hand hand, asked him his name and told him something like "this whole thing with your phone in my face isn't working for me. I'd rather see your face than your phone". The guy left before the next song was over. The sound was much better there than Pontiac but Dave was having issues with feedback on and off all night. All in all though, we really enjoyed this show. We opted to not try for videos but I did get some pretty good pictures.

Here's an official article about the show, which is ok but sort of lame too: http://www.indystar.com/story/entertain ... /71071792/

The following night was in Kalamazoo at Bell's Brewery. I really liked this place too! All sorts of fancy beers for reasonable prices tends to make waiting a little easier. We could hear sound check where we were sitting in the hallway but not see it, they did String of Pearls and I can't remember what else for it. Sound was good here and it's a really nice place to see a show. Really friendly staff, one even rewarded me with a free porter for good behavior. There was a girl in the front with her phone and same as in Indy, Dave shook her hand asked her name and asked if she had documented enough that she could put her phone down and enjoy the show. He said that people always pull their phones out for Runaway Train, so everyone should just wait for that song. Unlike the guy from the previous night though, she stuck around and Dave gave her probably 2 or 3 guitar picks throughout the show. No videos from this show either, felt weird trying to get video after the girl got asked not to take photos/videos but got some pictures. I was sad when this show was over because we only had one more to go to.

The best sound, lights and stage was probably at Hard Rock Live in Cleveland but I found the crowd there was a bit lackluster, almost everyone sat in their assigned seats through both bands. But there's some very positive reviews on Ticketmaster for that show...so perhaps I shouldn't be so quick to judge. I've never been to a casino before and being there really weirded me out. I found whole rock and roll branding of the casino to be really, really hard to stomach. People connected to machines by a cord, zombiefied while being encouraged to "Earn Rockstar Rewards!" and have a rockin' good time at the ROCKSINO!". Just...no. But that show sure looked and sounded great! We have a pretty good video of April Fool from that night...perhaps more to come (can't remember how to embed the video, can't find the info about it...gave up and here's a link):

The setlist was the same for Pontiac, Indy and Kalamazoo. Very cool to get to see the two new songs each night and kinda "get to know them". Really like both of them, both are great live songs. I love, love, love Supersonic so much. Hopefully, everyone gives the new songs a chance...they sound like Soul Asylum to me. It was very cool to hear No Time for Waiting as well, since it's a long time favorite of mine. The Game just sounds so perfect live. And Shut Down!!! They changed things up a little in Cleveland with Oxygen in place of Whatchaneed and a cover of Nick Cave's Into My Arms in place of The Game. I kinda, sorta requested the Nick Cave song...or rather enthusiastically endorsed it when Winston mentioned it when I talked to him after the Kalamazoo show. I know they've done it occasionally in the past but never at a show I've been to, so I was really glad to get to hear it.

Thank for the reviews Nikki! That Rathskellar place looks awesome. I'd forgotten the Skyler story so thanks too for the reminder.

setlist.fm is showing this for the Indy setlist. Not seeing much variation for most of these June/July shows....
