I believe there is no thread for this show... I don't know if anyone here went there... but I found an odd review of this show and it said that they also played "Spinnin"... I wonder if that's right.

Yes, I was there, It wasn't a busy show maybe only 200-300 people. I can't recall the set list but I may have some 30 second sound clips I can go through and figure it out. I know they played string of pearls and that they still think it's the late 80's, I'm totally okay with this.

Hm... the guy that wrote that review sounds like kind of a self-indulgent moron if you ask me. I don't really care how much trouble he had getting to the venue, nor does anyone else. More than 50% of the article is about himself and not the show he was supposed to review. I also think it's quite rude to put a numerical figure on somebody's weight or write libelous things about what someone else may or may not have been doing.

That said, I hope they actually did play Spinnin'. Maybe they'll play it at First Avenue.

I totally agree with you Sara. That was a horrible excuse for a "reveiw" of a rock gig.

Mr. Bland is an amazing drummer and the only thing that sorry sack of Sh*t could say about him was his size?(his association with Prince looks like it was edited in later) completely inexcusable. Thank God that Dave & Dan are not that shallow, and eagerly welcomed Mike into the group.
That "reviewer" was definately more concerned with painting himself as a "cool" dude who gets smashed and trips on magic schrooms, than in actually writing about the show.
He claimed in the article that Soul Asylum once ruled his world, but I doubt it. He mentioned that they played some "new" songs, but didn't identify anything from TSL, and we can be fairly confident that they would have played All Is Well and Whatcha Need, so his difinition of "new" was probably the TSL stuff, I'm thinking, so if they really did play any of the new material that they're working on now, this guy's useless review can't be counted on to confirm the "newness" of what was played.

found a setlist for this show online. Sadly it does not appear that "Spinnin" was played.....

I went to this Coquitlam show with a friend for whom I'd once made an SA comp tape, thus converting him. Not knowing much about the Red Robinson Show Theatre at the Casino. Had high hopes for a great show.

Getting to be right down at the front, leaning against the stage, looking up at the lads was a treat. They played old stuff and new stuff. It seemed a little hot for them (literally) -- I recall Dan pulling at his shirt and puffing. Tommy Stinson joked with the crowd a lot. "I want to introduce you to my new favourite band, Soul Asylum!" he said early on. Dave kept his eyes closed through at least the first half of the show, not looking entirely comfortable. He was loosened up by the time they were playing "Whatcha Need" because he joked a lot with Michael at that point. They goofed around with My Generation at the end. And Dave stomped around like a t-rex when playing the closing riff from the last she's got weapons tune.

I have to confess the sound mix was poor. You couldn't hear the guitar solos well, nor the vocals. And the crowed... the crowd included a lot of people who probably had tickets just because they were staying at the casino, as part of a package deal. I can not imagine otherwise why white-haired old ladies would be tottering in, which they were. And while the theatre must have had seats for maybe 1,000 people, there could not have been more than 200 max, maybe fewer. So in that sense it was a disappointment. The crowd was embarrassingly small in such a huge venue,and the real fans were an even smaller part of the crowd. The disproportion was, well, conspicuous, you know...

Dave kept saying "you're too kind, you're too kind" when people applauded. Maybe I'm paranoid but it felt like his repeating it was a bit sarcastic at times: translation: you are awful nice to be clapping so loud when the soundmix is poor and this casino venue is artificial and miles away from the hot sweaty beerclubs we came from.

But then again, like Dan said on a tv interview once, you can't wake up every morning and feel like screaming at yourself in the mirror. EVerybody grows old. Everybody mellows with age.... but playing in casinos? There has to be a better type of venue that's not seedy but not sterile...

All this being said, the SA Coquitlam show was a 100% nonstop thrill for me. I loved every minute because I love this band and their songs and they do not come to Canada very often and to SEE them is a joy. The tunes were ringing in my head for days afterward...

As for the review that was referred to earlier in this thread, yes, the guy did not give any useful information or provide any interesting reflections so he is not really worth worrying about.

At the end of the show I was happy to buy a HangTime teeshirt I now wear for pajamas and an SA elkbeer teeshirt I sometimes wear to parties... a few people have complimented me on it.
