Into the Light lyrics

Please feel free to contribute and help with the lyrics. I know it's the first time the songs have been played and they might be more clearer/understandable/change as the guys get more experience playing them over time.

Everything I got so far is just a guess, so if you see any mistakes I posted please correct me. The parts I definitely am unsure of are in yellow (and are totally farfetched :) ).

I will update this post as we try to figure more out.

Into the Light

Once you’ve drawn the line, you can’t think twice
You would never take your own advice
Skating on a grave that’s paved with rice
You step into the light
How can I be sure if this is a sure thing
I’m so tangled up in puppeteers’ strings
Once you’ve crossed the line
You’re stepping into

Breaking horses, raising cain, heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better, it gets better still

Once you’ve crossed the line You can’t let go
Never go out, I have been alone
Skating on a grave that’s made of stone
You step into the light

You better be sure that this is a sure thing
As a puppet on a string
Once you’ve crossed the line
You’re stepping into

Breaking horses, raising cain, heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better, it gets better still

Once you’ve crossed the line, you can’t think twice
You’re looking out of

Chasing sirens, red lights change
No time left to kill
Waving flags of fine drawn lines
Find a cheaper thrill

This is a sure thing
Once you’ve crossed the line
You step into the light
You step into the light

Breaking horses, raising cain heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better, it gets better still

Waving flags of macho life (much of your life)
Find a cheaper plan

Maybe this sounds crazy, but for the ????? I keep hearing "Breaking horses, raising Cain". Anybody else want to weigh in on this one?

That may be actually what it is. I was hearing that from the start but didn't make any sense (at least to me), so I left that one blank. If you hear the exact same thing I've been hearing, it actually may be that. :)

Well, at least there's two of us hearing crazy lyrics. I've been listening to this one a lot this afternoon (it's officially my new favorite of theirs - can't wait to hear it in a clearer recording - I just hope it doesn't lose its spark in a studio version). I've only got two more tweaks to suggest for the lyrics, because I just can't make out anything else clearly. I'm pretty sure it's heading (not headed) for the hills, and instead of chasing silence, I keep hearing the line chasing sirens, red lights change. But I could be wrong. You know, I think somebody should just get on the horn to Dave & ask him to send us a copy of the lyrics...this is going to drive me nuts now...lol.

Okay, Jim - I've listened to it a few more times today, and here are my final thoughts (these lyrics have been driving me nuts, to quote a terrible Dave joke). I'm pretty sure now that "into the light" is some kind of reference to settling down/maturing, something along those lines. The "grave that's made of rice" would make a really funny metaphor for getting married (I know it's a stretch but people do still throw rice at weddings...). I think the breaking horses and chasing sirens part refers to single life/sowing wild oats. I'm still not sure "macho flag" is right, but it fits the theme, and if I listen to just Dan's vocals, I swear that's what I hear.

I'm not sure about the rice thing, but I do like the metaphor (although you might be right) :). All the other lyrics you mentioned do sound like them now that I see them written down.

For "find a macho plan" I thought it might have been "much [of] your life" but it definitely sounds like what you said, even for both times it's sung in the song.

This video just posted on YouTube, some of the lyrics are a little different than the recordings, but I don't hear anything noticeable enough to make a change to what we've got.

The only really different thing is the lyrics starting at 1:44 (which I think is an error on Dave's part... they're still learning :) ).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHVl9mzhYNI

Unlike the Mankato show, Dave does repeat the "puppeteers' strings" lyric (not puppets) in the video. I'm just gonna keep going with the lyrics for the recordings unless something stands out in the video and/or we get a little clear version.

Thanks a bunch for the help. :D

I'll put my contributions in as a new color, You did a great job, Jim, and the YouTube clip that was posted was VERY helpful and really helped me to possibly figure out the verse that I think used to be the 1 that was all in uncertain yellow? I also hear breaking horses, raising cain, so that must be right, with 3 votes? I'm not sure, but at least in a cpl of places, I think "heading" might actually be "headed" for the hills. But that one word's not a big deal, is easily interchangeable, and I figure Dave probably does interchange the word's ending himself quite often. (I also agree it's rice, so I took the yellow off the "r" Maybe a reference of Dave considering making it official and having a church wedding with Karen instead of just being a common law couple? To me this song very much sounds like he's talking himself into it, :D. I see Carrie mentioned the same idea, while I was working on my own edited lyrics post, so I'm glad I'm not the only person thinking this song contains lots of imagery/pondering about being settled down as being "the light"
I used the youtube vid for my edits tonight, so that might be why I heard a completely different verse in that one spot, because the first time I read your post, with the mp3 we were given, your lines sounded right at that time, but I heard completely different lines in the video clip.

Into the Light

Once you’ve drawn the line, you can’t think twice
You would never take your own advice
Waking on a grave that’s paved with rice
You step into the light
How can I be sure if this is a sure thing
I’m so tangled up in puppeteers’ strings
Once you’ve crossed the line
It's as if you're

Breaking horses, raising cain, heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better, it gets better still

instead of these lines:
Once you’ve crossed the line You can’t let go
Never go out, I have been alone
Skating on a grave that’s made of stone
You step into the light

I hear (NOTE: from the version in the YouTube clip):
With(whet?) your appetite, you can't be (loved?)
And everybody says you can't go home
I'll take you to a place, that no one knows
Step into the light

[I can't] be sure that this is a sure thing
[I’m all tangled up in puppeteers’ strings
Once you’ve crossed the line
You’re stepping into (I don't hear this, but I can't figure out what I hear instead, again, in the video clip version)

Breaking horses, raising cain, heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better, it gets better still

Once you’ve crossed the line, you can’t think twice
You’re looking out of

Chasing sirens, red lights change
No time left to kill
[Waving flags of macho life
Find a cheaper thrill

[I'm sure] This is a sure thing
Once you’ve crossed the line
You step into the light
You step into the light

Breaking horses, raising cain heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better, it gets better still

Waving flags of macho life

This is my favorite of the new songs, and will be even more so once we've managed to accurately decipher the still questionable lyrics, and I get them memorized to that I can sing along for the entire song. If I could find some headphones, I'm sure I'd have more edits to suggest, but I give up for now and will wait until we're given a more official version, before spending more time on these early versions, esprcially as it seems Dave's still working on lyrics himself, since that one verse is different between the 2 versions available atm.

I got one sheet of lyrics out of four from the NJ concert on 9/11. Here is what is on my sheet.

Breaking Horses, raising cain
Heading for the hills
The best day ever just got better
it gets better still
Waving flags of fine drawn lines
Find a cheaper thrill.

Thanks a bunch, every little bit helps (actually it's the first piece of lyrics we know for sure they're right :P ). I'm glad though it included that first line of the chorus.

Very remiss in getting to this  I got some of the lyrics for into the light at the Champaign/Urbana show... Sorry, my daughter get's married next week, am desperately trying to find a job, and taking a class and well you know life... Just forgot until I noticed the post from NJ.

So this is what is on lyric sheets:

Breaking Horses Raising Cain
Heading for the Hills
Best day ever just got better
it gets better still

Chasing sirens red lights change
not timeleft to kill (timeleft is one word on sheet)
waving flags of fine drawn lines
find a cheaper thrill

Breaking horses raising Cain
heading for the hills
the best day ever just got better
it gets better still
waving flags of fine drawn lines
find a cheaper thrill

Once you've rolled the dice you can't think twice
you would never take your own advice
skating on a grave that's paved with ice
you step into the light

So if you are out tonight pick me up
Everybody hates being alone
Take me to a place where no one goes
Step into the light

So if you're out tonight pick me up
Running out on

Chasing...
No time...
Waving..
Find...

Sorry did not get to sooner, hope to make the Christmas show. Wish they were coming to Chicago in Nov. too!
