Discuss Golden Smog, The Volunteers, The O'Jeez, and any other bands related to Soul Asylum.

Joseph Arthur

Post by Yaz McBoo »

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the off-topic section, but someone asked about other bands we listen to. I think we all know who the "related bands" are, and there's not much news with them at this point, so I'm gonna drop here some stuff from other newish bands I have been listening to lately.

Starting with Joseph Arthur.

Boogie Christ - (Act 1) is one of my "desert island discs" from the last ten years or so. Since 2004 I'd say that list includes Wilco-A Ghost is Born, Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, The Damnwells' first two albums, Eddie Vedder-Into the Wild, and maybe one or two things by Mark Lanegan. And Boogie Christ is certainly near the top of that list.

I actually saw Joseph Arthur in 1999, as one of the openers for Three Fish, a Pearl Jam side band that included Jeff Ament, who later formed RNDM with Arthur. I honestly didn't even remember anything about him from that night. But Joseph Arthur made an impression on me when he opened for Soul Asylum at Bowery Ballroom in July 2012. His band that night included Kraig Johnson, who played bass with Arthur for a few years.

Joseph Arthur has a fairly extensive catalog, having been making music since the 1990s. But it's his albums from that last 4-5 years that appeal to me the most.

Here are some choice selections, starting with the epic finale from Boogie Christ Act 1:

Maybe you'll find something you'll enjoy,

Cool, good to know. I usually don't go out of my way to recommend bands that I like because I know how hard it is to get into music. Many times people have recommended bands to me, and listening to the album or to some youtube songs just didn't cut it for me. Most of the bands I've found in the last decade or so have all been via live shows, as opening acts, or as headliners I went to see by recommendation or even on a whim. I guess I need that in-person connection to appreciate music that otherwise wouldn't blow me away on a first listen on my stereo, er computer.

i agree live shows are great for discovering new-to-you bands but since kids i haven't had time to go to many shows. and yeah other people recommending bands can be ... a little frustrating but i think of it as like ... clothes shopping, you ahve to just try on a lot of stuff to find something you like

friends i met on this site recommended the jayhawks to me a few years ago, but the first time i sampled some songs i just wasn't feeling it. then i gave a different album a try after reading another person's review and just loved it couldnt get it out of my head and now i love them all.

Yep, because of SA I got into the Jayhawks, Golden Smog, & Wilco/Uncle Tupelo. I think a number of people on here are, though I don't often find it to be reciprocal from fans of those bands.

LOL. I like Wilco but I haven't seen a good JEFF TWEEDY inside joke reference in a while. Thanks Nicole!
