Here's something I found out about through Google Alerts: There's a podcast called Wings For Wheels that recently ran an episode about the Twin Cities musical scene. It has a segment about Soul Asylum that starts at 1:19:00 and goes on until 1:30:20. They mention Soul Asylum's rise to stardom (of course), the whole deal with Dave and Winona, and The Silver Lining and then play parts of Whatcha Need, Cartoon, and Black Gold.

Link: Episode 47: The Twin Cities With Tim & Michele (mp3)

I haven't listened to anything else on the podcast except for the segment about Soul Asylum. If anyone finds something else of interest, consider posting a mention of it here along with a timestamp so anyone else who's interested can check it out.

Thanks, Homesick (one of my favorite Soul Asylum songs, btw). I hope you find time to listen to the rest of it. I know it's a little long (about an hour longer than my show normally is), but I think it's worth it.

Also, please check out my other Minneapolis-based episodes, including my interview with Bob Mould about his career and Jim Walsh about his book on The Replacements.

Nice find here. It's kind of scary listening to this, as besides the first and last band they discuss, it feels like a trip through my CD collection. Of course that would be missing tons of other bands, but it's a really interesting podcast.

For those of you who are interested, here's a brief overview of the progression of bands they discuss:

Prince
Trip Shakespeare -> Semisonic -> Dan Wilson
The Jayhawks
Golden Smog
Replacements -> Paul Westerberg
Husker Du (doesn't cover bob solo/sugar as this wasn't really mpls)
Gear Daddies -> Martin Zellar
Soul Asylum
The Hold Steady

Definitely a good list for those who aren't familiar with the mpls music scene. It's really big on the 80s into early 90s history. Quite interesting to hear. I think I'm going to have to go back and listen to the Replacements and Bob podcast specials. Quite interesting stuff, and the broadcasters are actually knowledgeable of this history.

Wow, somehow I missed that anyone had posted any replies to this thread. Anyway, thanks for dropping by, Dave. I don't know if you're reading this, but if you ever produce anything else of interest to this community, be sure to let us know!
