Favorite album of the first half of 2008

Post by philipgar »

It's hard to believe that 2008 is almost halfway done. Time is flying by. Anyhow, my question for everyone is what are their favorite album(s) of the year so far. It's a tough question as (in my opinion) there have been a lot of good albums released. So far I've picked up (in no particular order)

Marah - Angels of Destruction
Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creations Dark
Gary Louris - Vagabonds
Bob Mould - District Line
Kathleen Edwards - Asking For Flowers
The Old 97's - Blame it on Gravity
Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch

I think if I had to choose just one of these, I'd have to go with Vagabonds, but it's a really close race. I don't know if I'm able to choose yet, the only one I wouldn't put in the running is Bob's latest album (It's alright, but I haven't been overly impressed with his last few solo albums). Both Marah and the Truckers have released what I would consider their best album to date, and I don't think there's been enough time to fully judge the new 97's album and Mudcrutch's album (although both have been great).

So what other (new) music have people been listening to this year?

Phil

I love Maritime - They're from Milwaukee. I loved We, the Vehicles and this year they put out Heresy and the Hotel Choir.

DISTURBED - Indestructible

Their 3rd #1 in a row...only 6 other Rock bands have done that...not bad.

But after June 24th I dare to say my answer will be...

MÖTLEY CRÜE - Saints Of Los Angeles
"...and who is the hound at the downtown dog pound who speaks english when the watchman's not in sight?"

I must say that I don't care much for the new Old 97s. It doens't match up to either their last record or Rhett's solo albums. Just doesn't do it for me. Mudcrutch is great. Mark Lanegan's record (Gutter Twins) is alright. I'm having a hard time remembering what else I bought so far. Most of my favorite bands are on tour this year but I don't think too many of them have/will released new albums this year.

IMO, the two best CDs to come out in the first half of 2008 are:

The Kooks - Konk
The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

I don't think I can really chose - most likely to the fact that today's music is very unenjoyable for myself - overplayed indie shite all over :?.
