I'm not too big on the Jayhawks these days but I was really looking forward to the Gary show. Forgot to add that I am going to see the Old 97s Too Far To Care show in 2 nights, that should be a lot of fun!

Husband and I saw Rush last night - me for the first time - with a couple of friends; they played at the new home of the (once and again) New York (Brooklyn, now) Nets.

Amazing, amazing show. Multimedia, amazing energy, incredible musicianship and stamina. It was very much like my first Soul Asylum show: I knew they were good and that their live shows have long been held in high esteem, but I had no idea how good they really are.

I went to see a Henry Rollins spoken word show on October 25. I really enjoyed it. I especially liked what he had to say about music being a friend and leading to a sense of community among like-minded people. I know that's true for me. It's fun to hear his stories from all the different places he's traveled (Haiti, N. Korea, Iran, among others).

Red Hot Chili Peppers at Target Center Oct 30th. Flea thanked Minnesota for The Replacements, Husker Du and Prince. Also, drummer Chad Smith was born in St Paul. It was a great show!

Went to Neil Young/Crazy Horse Monday night in Brooklyn; Patti Smith and some band called Everest were the openers. Everyone sounded perfect - Neil's voice hasn't lost a thing (nor has Patti's, actually). Lots of loooong jams. I wish I'd been more awake....

Over the past weekend, I was in little rock for the white water taverns holiday hang out, aka happy birthday Travis of last chance records. Anyhow, this was mostly a Friday and Saturday event with two cow garge, slobberbone, and glossary headlining. I was at th same thing last year, and hope to be there again next year. The shows are very relaxed, all the bands are friends, and most of the audience either knows each other already, or soon will. Between sets. And before shows everyone's there together, fans talking to fans and and, embers alike, with little distinction. We were all there for the same reason.

Anyhow, the music this year kicked ass, the beer and food were great, and I'm still coming down from my rock and roll high. I must say, few experiences match this, except maybe getting together for an Mpls holiday show. It makes such a difference when everyone slowly gets to know everyone else, and mos people travelled at least a few hours for the show. Sometimes we get that in Mpls, but ing a one day show it misses out some. I think if they did a two day hung things would really fit together with everyone hanging out together, having beers eating good food etc. it's these moments that make shows extra special, and worth traveling for

Kinda abandoned my own thread, but I'm back! So far this year the highlights have been:

Soundgarden (great sound, but couldn't see a damned thing due to being stuck in the back)

Nick Cave (again, great sound, and a great, personal connection if you happened to be in the first three rows - he didn't really play to the rest of the venue)

Gary Louris (spot-on)

Soul Asylum - First time seeing them with Justin Sharbono; he seemed a bit nervous, but I suspect one could only tell up-close. Acquitted himself ably, and was lovely to fans. Also, loved Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts!

Shovels and Rope - If you haven't heard them, look them up. Fantastic.

Courtney Love - She was professional and put on a great show, despite having a propensity for being a train wreck in her personal life. It seemed a short set (one hour including the encore), but she just fired out the songs minus any banter. She may be a bit...unbalanced, but is also a helluva performer - and sorely underestimated, I suspect.

Saw drivin' and cryin' at Mercury Lounge last night - Findlay Brown opened for them. I love the Merc 'cause it's such an intimate setting - 200 people, tops. Besides the fact that drivin' and cryin' put on such a good show (no set list!), Joseph Arthur and Kraig Jarrett Johnson surprise-guested on a few encore songs.

I'd chatted with Kraig for a second at a Gary Louris show a bit ago; said it was cool to get to see him, as I can't access the space where he often gigs (downstairs, no elevator). He'd assured me we'd somehow find a way - I should come, and we'd figure it out. I shrugged it off, thinking it sounded pretty impossible.

When I saw him last night, I mentioned that it was funny that I keep seeomg him gig everyplace but there, and reminded him of our previous conversation, just shooting the shit. He's lovely - said he felt awful about not arranging something, and I should come in and he'd definitely figure a way! That made me feel bad, actually - I had to assure him a few times that, really, I totally didn't intend a dig. It was just a, "Remember you had that conversation? That was me" thing. I think I finally convinced him I wasn't insulted. (I hope so, anyway!).

Went to Lollapalooza in Grant Park the weekend before last, and I must concur on the shovels and rope post, they were great. Highlights were Wavves (Weezer meets punk kinda sound), vampire weekend, and the cure.
