Tachi Palace - $95 ?? Really

Post by whiskeytango »

Am I the only that finds that ticket price to be a bit over the top? I mean Front section is $95 Middle is $45 and GA is $20. The ole pocketbook might be a little lean to get some Soul Asylum love here.

I am looking to go to that show too. I must admit, the price does seem a bit strangely high. Having no experience with the venue, I have no idea how it is setup, or if that is really even worth the extra cash.

Hey all-

I think I was the only one who went to this show, so I thought I would chime in with a little info.

The show was due to start at 7:30, but I was unable to arrive until 8, due to traffic. I came down from the bay area to see the show, which was about 200 miles. My best friend commented that I probably drove the farthest to see the show of anyone there, including the band.

Any way, I managed to catch the second half of what was likely a 45 minute show. The setlist, as I know it, and not in perfect order...

~whatever they played before I arrived~
Without a Trace
Black Gold
Oxygen
Feeling Manly (Introduced as a new song)
Whatcha Need
Cartoon
Rhinestone Cowboy (Also introduced as a new song, one dave claimed he just wrote"
Never Really Been
Runaway Train
Smokin in the Boys Room (about half)
Just Like Anyone

A few notes about the show... It was an outdoor show, nearly 100 degrees that day, and only with a few hundred people there. I was likely the only person there for SA, as most seemed to be chatting their entire set. Dave, Dan, and Michael were all very chatty, the bassist was referred to as Tom, but I wasnt able to tell who it was from my angle. It was pretty apparent, that since no one was paying attention, that it was hot, very smokey from the CA wildfires, and downwind from a cow pasture, and so the band just had a pretty carefree attitude the whole show. It was the strangest SA show I have ever seen. They decided to improve a new song, on the spot, which Dan dubbed "feeling manly". It was dave singing/screaming "Feeling manly... maaannlllyyyy" which Dan improving spoken word type verses to daves chorus, and the rest of the band screwing around. Dan seemed to be making fun of the audience that was there, talking about driving his El Camino, etc etc. It was rather funny, and totally off the wall. After completing another song, cant recall which, michael bland starting talking a bunch and telling Dave to give him a guitar solo, which ended up with Dave doing a few minutes of his finest faux solo ever, kind of a Eddie Van Halen theme, with the tapping techniques, etc. This also ended up with bass solos, as well. After Rhinestone Cowboy, Dan joked that they were planning a second set, inside the casinos lounge. Dan also mentioned he would be at the bar, in case anyone wanted to buy him a drink. Before the final song, dave said they had time for one more, and asked for any special requests from the audience. After about 10 seconds of ambivalent silence, they launched into "smokin in the boys room" then stopped after a couple minutes, and finished with JLA.

I went looking for Dan after, to buy him a beer, but he was on his cell phone, and headed up to his hotel room. Bummer.

All in all, a VERY strange show...

That show must have been a blast! I've seen them goof around, but it sounds like they were in an especially goofy mood which seems like a recipe for a great show -- and a very special experience! And Rhinestone Cowboy is always a treat.

thanks for the report - much appreciated!

If they did a 45 min set and you saw 10 songs, thinking you didn't miss too much....

Indeed it sounded like a strange show, but sounds like the band took it in stride and ran with it. Gotta love it when they do things like that!! :)
