My first Soul Asylum show tonight! I had to get a login and make a post about this!

What a great show. i've always known they were a good live band. They had so much energy! Here is the set-list. The order is wrong, but I think this is all the songs

Somebody to Shove (dave let everyone know that Michael had started growing a mo-hawk, and that he had started today)

All is Well

Lately (Dave kept saying awe shucks you guys are too kind between songs at one point Dan
said no, you guys are just right)

Misery (had a new part at the end I've never heard before)

Gone till November (said something about Wycleff Jean, but then said "ah let's leave politics out"

Bittersweet Heart (Dave got into this one and swung his hips around)

Cartoon (it was awesome to hear this song live after listening to it for 15 years!)

Whatcha Need (Dave asked Michael what the crowd needed, he said maybe a hot poboy?
Maybe an oyster poboy? Maybe a cold beer? Maybe llegal or illegal
substances/? Dave finally concluded that we needed two things a bass solo
and a "rippin lead" Then he played his solo and laid the guitar on the ground
and shook his hand at it. The whole skit was pretty funny.

New Song Gravity (thanks to this site, i was able to listen to it before the show and recognize it)

New Song Into the Light (this song was really good! both of these new songs remind me of Hang Time material)

When I ran off and Left Her (dedicated to Vic, dave said something about getting a wheel chair out on the stage, but i didn't understand what he meant. It was awesome to hear this song live, wasn't expecting it)

Black Gold (dedicated to the Gulf of Mexico sea creatures, Dan mentioned shrimp fisherman,
really cool seeing as how Biloxi-Gulfport has gotten some oil from the Horizon spill)

Never Really Been (Dave said this song goes alittle something like this....actually it goes exactly
like this)

Without a Trace (dedicated to Karl, Dan said he didn't think Karl ever made it down to Biloxi with
the band to play, but if he had, he would be winning in the casino tonight)

Runaway Train

Just Like Anyone (dave pointed to the different band members at the end of the song when it
was their turn to sing)

Closer to the Stars (started off acoustic, then he grabbed an electric guitar after the intro and they
rocked it. The lighting made stars appear on the walls and rotate around
room.

Stand-up and Be strong. Dave brought out Eli to sing with him. He was wearing hearing protection. Then they brought out a whole bunch of kids who were introduced by name as eli's friends. Dave put his guitar around one kid's neck and he strummed it some. Alot of them were wearing Saints jerseys (biloxi is about an hour from New Orleans), so the crowd liked that. Dave and Dan made comments about the Vikings and Saints. Dave asked if the Saints had beat the Vikings yet. Young Eli is a musician in training, he did a good job!)

Encore: Solution (dan said they wouldn't let them play any longer, and good luck in the casino!)

The band seemed to have a great time. Alot of people were singing along with the older songs like Never Really Been, which was really cool. Dave is a pretty funny guy.

My wife is expecting, so our daughter-to-be was treated to Soul Asylum for her first concert. She was kicking around alot during some of the songs! I guess she is a fan already.

I'm glad Soul Asylum is still out there doing their thing. Looking forward to that new album, and another show some day!

Welcome to the site and forum, and Thanks a LOT for making the effort to register so that your first forum post could be a review of your first live Soul Asylum show.

Congrats on finally getting to see them live, and it sounds like your very first show was pretty special, so SCORE!, lol

Hope to see lots more of you in our little SA fan community!

The encore was Pere Ubu's "Final Solution," which they've done a few times before. I thought it sounded great, but was an odd choice for the Biloxi audience.

I agree it was a great show. It's also always nice to see Eli join Dave. I had held a spot up front for a lady I met in the lobby who was there with her 7-year-old son and was worried he wouldn't be able to see. It was a lot of fun watching the show with him -- I may actually have watched him as much as I watched the actual show. And he got pretty excited when he saw all those kids the same age as him on stage. I had to point out that he had a better spot than them to actually watch the show, though. ;)

Thanks for the detailed show report!
Congrats on your baby. I just had to share that in February I saw soul asylum while I was pregnant with my son and he turned out really great. I think the in-utero concert was a good influence on him.

I was there last night. We drove in from the ATL. It was probably the 15th time I've seen them, the first in 1980-something opening for Husker Du in Athens, GA. It was a killer show. Not a lot of people there and many of them seemed to have no idea who Soul Asylum was (several people I talked to were comped tickets by the casino), but it was a great show.

Thanks for the setlist and notes. The wheelchair joke was a reference to Vic Chesnutt , the guy who wrote When I Ran Off and Left her. He used a wheelchair (he's now passed away). Great tune! Never expected to hear them do that, but it's nice to see them playing some different covers from time to time.

By the way, who was that on bass? That wasn't Tommy Stinson, was it? If it was, I had more to drink than I thought.

I agree, the Biloxi show was great! My wife and I had never met anyone from the band before, so we were pretty stoked when I met Dave and his family in the hall checking into the room next to ours. After telling him that we were at the Orlando show the previous night, he asked us for a full report that night comparing the two shows. We then saw him in the cafe bar after the show having a beer and spoke with him for a few minutes...what an awsome, down to earth guy! He asked me again which show was better, and I had to give it to the Biloxi show, mainly because his son and friends coming out for Stand up and be Strong was something we've never seen them do live. He laughed and repsonded by saying, "the kid thing works every time." I can not wait for another opportunity to see them live and am really looking forward to the new album!!!
