I'm a journalist for one of the leading video game websites. Several years ago during E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), I was covering Nintendo's press conferences and was one of the first to watch an early trailer of the much hyped Wii game Super Mario Galaxy. Apart from the innovative gameplay, an aspect of the trailer that stood out was the music: a kinda catchy tune about flying that seemed to fit perfectly with the game itself.
Several months later when official trailers were released to the public, I was surprised to find that Nintendo had chosen to do away with the song they played at E3 and go with their traditional type orchestral Mario themes instead. I looked into it and think that they had run into problems with the song they chose; without knowing the details, I would guess that either there were licensing issues or Nintendo's marketing department felt the song didn't convey the right image. Whatever.
Anyways I forgot about the song until a few months ago, when Soul Asylum played a show in my hometown and I found my way to this site. After surfing around for a while and listening to some samples on iTunes, I was surprised when I happened to come across the tune I had heard in that old trailer: "Levitation" by Dave Pirner, from a recommendation. I didn't know that he was that guy who sang for the band, I remember him with the dreads.
Anyways, knowing the trailer would probably interest you and other Nintendo fans, I put the trailer up I had from an old office press kit on Youtube. so here's the rip of the original "Levitation" trailer for Super Mario Galaxy. Enjoy!
That's pretty sweet; I bet it would have something to do with licensing issues or something as you say. Honestly though I don't recall any Mario or even any other Nintendo game (PS3 and Xbox yes) having lyrics during a trailer; always been an instrumental piece... maybe that was a reason why it was scrapped? I wonder if Dave knew anything about it or was contacted before hand. Can't say I've played the game though; last Mario game I played was for the Super Nintendo.
Whatever the case, still awesome.
Do you have anymore possible information that you could share with us that you might be aware of?

I think it's safe to say that a lot of people didn't take notice of this year's prank, and those who did weren't really fooled by it. Well, you can't succeed every year. At any rate, we hope you enjoyed the video!
