Re: Who should be the bands bassist?
Winston is great and I’m glad the band has found a regular bass player. But I think the inclusion of Pete Donnelly to the band was a recipe for greatness.
He has a rare combination of technical precision and musicality, and his playing is just so effortless. He could play just about anything, whether they had practiced it together or not. Plus, he can sing, which helped with background vocals. Finally, his beat-up Fender bass rivals Dave’s telecaster for coolest instrument ever.
When he played with SA, he sort of hung back (avoided the “cool” rock moves that you see with Tommy and Winston), as though he were a hired hand and didn’t want to draw too much attention to himself. But when he’s onstage with the Figgs, he’s a dynamo. No question, one of my favorite bassists ever.
Unfortunately, his touring schedule with Figgs, NRBQ, and his solo stuff made it tough to keep up with the SA gigs. I’m still hoping the Figgs and SA share a bill again sometime soon.

I agree that pete is my favorite bass player with SA (after Karl of course). He has so much energy, and he's a great player. He's also a super-awesome guy, can't really go wrong with him. However, he does belong to the figgs, and I think they play more shows a year than SA does (even though the figgs are also kind of a part time band). I suppose it's hard for SA to get a full time bass player committed to only them, because who would want a gig where you play maybe 20-30 times a year. It's not like being a musician pays much to begin with, but without working a lot, you really can't live on it.
As for the others, winston seemed really good when I saw him, and i love the dynamic between dave, tommy, and michael, but tommy does kind of push himself up front a lot with the band. Not really a bad thing, but I suppose I'm still used to karl who kind of did his own thing, and did it well.

Re: Who should be the bands bassist?
I've yet to see a show on the Delayed Reaction tour (still waiting and hoping for a Chicago or Milwaukee one), but I would be fine with anyone BUT Tommy.
Playing amazingly large venues all over the world (minus the US) as a hired gun in Axl's band has gone to his head. Sure, he was in the Replacements, but they haven't been active since '91. From the show's I have seen with him on bass, he's just displays way too much ego for me, personally.
SA, to me, has always been an image of some immensely talented guys that just get up there and play. Tommy wears a sportcoat. It fits with Mike Rutherford in Genesis, but not in Soul Asylum. And, no disrespect to Mike at all-he's a hell of a bassist as well as a guitarist.
