3rd Anniversary + GDU's and Tommy's Birthday!
3rd Anniversary + GDU's and Tommy's Birthday!
Wow, it's already been three years! What's more, these next 12 months will be the most exciting ones since the website was launched, as we eagerly await the band's new album.
Of course, it wouldn't really be October 6th without a big birthday celebration for Tommy Stinson as well. Happy Birthday!
Share your best wishes and your memories of the past three years below!

Re: 3rd Anniversary and Tommy's Birthday!
Happy birthday Tommy! I also want to point out today's actually a triple birthday! Grave Dancers Union was released 18 years ago today (which was actually the reason we opened the site on this day)!
As for the site, the best part about the past three years for me is all the new friends I met on here. I've really enjoyed talking to you on here as well as having the opportunity to meet you at the concerts. It's been very fun and hope to continue to meet new people here and at the concerts for a long time.

You're completely right, of course. GDU's release date is so intertwined with the site's launch in my mind that I completely forgot about it. Thanks for the heads-up!

As for me, this website is the reason that I got into computer programming in the first place, and also the reason that I'm currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science. In fact, if I weren't doing that, I would be trying to become a journalist and I realize now that I probably wouldn't have enjoyed that very much. (And as Danny Alexander writes, it's hard to find a full-time job in journalism to begin with.)
Obviously, the site has also taught me a lot about Soul Asylum. At one point, I actually thought I would be able to transcribe all of the lyrics by myself when I didn't even own all of the albums yet. Then Jim came along and did it all in less than a week, writing down many, many lines of lyrics that I still couldn't decipher on my own. Only when we premiered the show listing did I realize just how much rocking Soul Asylum has done over the years, apart from all of their records. All of this history probably makes me appreciate Soul Asylum even more.

Happy triple birthday to all!
So frustrated. Get up anyway.
So complicated. Changes every day.
So the darkness fades
And the light, will come shining through.

In answer to your question, Dangeroso, Grave Dancers Union is significant because it is the reason I discovered Soul Asylum. As great as their other music is, I never would have found out about them if it weren't for Runaway Train, and I know this is true for many other fans as well. More to the point, we felt that we needed a release date for the site in order to get it out there without getting caught up in delays, and the 15th anniversary of GDU turned out to be the closest significant date (but don't tell anyone I said that ).
I agree (obviously) that Homesick is a great song, and truly unique even compared to the band's other work. Perhaps one reason why it generally isn't played is that it's hard to capture on stage? Or maybe it just got lost in the fifth dimension.

Re: 3rd Anniversary + GDU's and Tommy's Birthday!
GDU is very important to me for a lot of reasons. The main one being is that I still probably wouldn't have even heard Runaway Train in its entirety. I know I've mentioned it before, but if it wasn't for this clip I don't know if I would even have heard of Soul Asylum to this day. Because of it, it made me run out and purchase GDU.EL DANGEROSO wrote:happy anniversary i love this site.thank you for giving SA fans a place to keep up with there favorite band. so how is GDU important to you homesick and mono.by the way HOMESICK is a underrated song seems to be forgotten by the band.
Since I liked GDU so much, it's also important because it led me to buy LYDLS. Once purchasing it, I found out my favorite artist at the time, "Weird" Al Yankovic did a parody of Misery (which was actually one of my favorite parodies; more-so cause I liked the music of the song), So that eventually led me to buy even more Soul Asylum CD's a few years down the line.
I became a bigger fan shortly before Candy came out and was basically a lurker on the Soul Asylum AOL and Yahoo message boards only cause I had no clue what all this other material they were talking about was; I didn't know they even other albums. They didn't have all that information online at the time.
Since I purchased that album and enjoying all those songs on them I learned a lot more of their history. It's given me the opportunity to see them in concert, meet the guys, make a bunch of friends, enjoy doing a website, and let myself know that there are hardcore Soul Asylum fans just as much as me (which some of my friends find that hard to believe).
And as they say, the rest is history.

Wow, a triple birthday! Congrats to y'all! Now that GDU has turned 18, it is no longer a minor in Croatia. It can buy itself a drink Well, again, congratulations to all three
